Open WebUI vs ChatGPT (2026): self-hosted control or zero-setup convenience?

Published 2026-10-19 · Facts and prices checked on vendor pages as of 2026-10-19 · Scores update weekly

Quick answer

ChatGPT is a hosted assistant: sign up and use it. Open WebUI is a free, self-hosted interface that you run yourself and connect to local or API models. Pick ChatGPT for zero setup and built-in features. Pick Open WebUI for control over where your data goes. On ToolStandings, ChatGPT leads chat assistants at 81.7 (#1 of 9), ahead of Open WebUI at 72.2 (#2 of 9).

It's a UI, not a model

This is the main source of confusion. You → Open WebUI → a model you choose (Ollama, vLLM, OpenAI, Anthropic or any OpenAI-compatible API), versus You → ChatGPT → OpenAI's models. Open WebUI describes itself as a "self-hosted AI platform… built to run entirely offline" with "support for Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs". Its answers are only as good as the model you connect.

A note on our scores

Our first data run (Oct 16) had Open WebUI narrowly ahead. That was because our checker missed three of ChatGPT's quality items: its API docs, release notes and security page live on other OpenAI domains. We verified them by hand on Oct 19, and ChatGPT's quality score rose to 25/25, which puts it ahead. Open WebUI still gets full Value points (15/15) for being open source. Neither score measures answer quality.

Privacy and data control

With Open WebUI and a local model, prompts and documents stay on your own machines. If you connect an API model, your prompts go to that provider under its terms. ChatGPT runs in OpenAI's cloud. OpenAI's pricing page says users on every plan can opt out of having their content used to train its models.

Setup and maintenance

Open WebUI installs with one Docker command, with pip or uv, or as a desktop app, then opens in your browser. Running it for a team means you handle updates, backups, sign-in and, for local models, hardware with enough memory or a GPU. If nobody on your team wants to own a server, ChatGPT is the simpler choice.

Licence note

Open WebUI's licence is BSD-style with a branding clause. You may not remove or change the "Open WebUI" branding unless your deployment has 50 or fewer end users in any rolling 30-day period, you have written permission, or you have an enterprise licence.

Using both

Many people do: they connect Open WebUI to an OpenAI API key for team chat on their own terms, and keep ChatGPT for its native features. API usage is billed separately from ChatGPT subscriptions.

Alternatives

In chat assistants: Claude (69) and Google Gemini (63.7). To run models locally behind Open WebUI, see local LLMs: Ollama, llama.cpp and LM Studio. For API access, see LLM APIs.

FAQ

Is Open WebUI free?

Yes. The software is free to self-host. You pay for your own hardware or hosting and for any API models you connect. Deployments with more than 50 users in 30 days can't remove its branding without permission or an enterprise licence.

Does Open WebUI need Ollama?

No. Ollama is a common local backend, but Open WebUI also connects to vLLM, OpenAI, Anthropic and other OpenAI-compatible APIs.

Can I use GPT models in Open WebUI?

Yes, by adding an OpenAI API key. API usage is billed by OpenAI separately from ChatGPT subscriptions.

Is Open WebUI more private than ChatGPT?

With local models, your prompts and documents stay on your own infrastructure. With an API model, prompts go to that provider.

Is Open WebUI as good as ChatGPT?

Answer quality depends on the model you connect. Open WebUI wins on control and customisation. ChatGPT wins on zero setup and built-in features like voice, image creation and deep research.

Which ranks higher on ToolStandings?

ChatGPT, at 81.7 (#1 of 9 in chat assistants), ahead of Open WebUI at 72.2 (#2 of 9).

How we compared

Scores come from the public ToolStandings formula (how we rank) and refresh automatically, so the numbers on this page always match the current tool pages. Momentum and Editor/community are still provisional for every tool. Vendor facts and prices were checked on the sources below on 2026-10-19. If a fact couldn't be verified on a vendor page, we left it out.
