Claude Code vs Cursor (2026): terminal agent or AI IDE? Scores, pricing and how to use both
Published 2026-10-19 · Facts and prices checked on vendor pages as of 2026-10-19 · Scores update weekly
Quick answer
Pick Cursor if you want to drive: inline Tab completion, visual per-file diffs and several model vendors. Pick Claude Code if you want to delegate multi-step work from the terminal (or run it inside Cursor). A common community framing is "driver vs delegator". On ToolStandings, Cursor scores 80.3 (#2 of 18 in AI coding assistants; overall #12) and Claude Code 78.5 (#5 of 18; overall #18). Many developers run both.

ToolStandings scores side by side
Checked against live tools.json on Oct 19, 2026 (Jamaica). The headline: Claude Code beats Cursor on Traction; Product quality is tied; Cursor's freemium Value is what keeps it ahead.
- Traction (of 25): Claude Code 25 vs Cursor 20.8 (Claude Code blends HN + GitHub stars; Cursor is HN-led).
- Product quality (of 25): both 25 (7/7 checklist; Cursor's API docs were verified by hand on Oct 19).
- Value (of 15): Cursor 12 (freemium) vs Claude Code 6 (paid-only; our rule scores paid tools 6/15 — see how we rank). Value does not model price level ($20 vs $30), only pricing type.
- Reliability (of 10): both 10. Momentum and Editor rating are provisional midpoints for both.

What each one is
Cursor (by Anysphere) is an AI-native code editor (a VS Code fork) with Tab completion, Cmd-K-style edits, an in-editor agent, cloud agents and automations, and AI code review through Bugbot. You stay in the editor and steer.
Claude Code (by Anthropic) is an agentic coding tool that reads your repo, edits files, runs commands and opens PRs. It runs in the terminal, in IDE extensions (VS Code, Cursor, Devin Desktop, JetBrains), in Anthropic's desktop and web apps, and in Slack. The default posture is delegation: you describe the outcome and review the result.
The "driver vs delegator" contrast is a common framing in 2026 developer threads, not a ToolStandings invention. The products overlap more than they used to: Cursor has cloud agents, and Claude Code has IDE extensions with inline diffs.
Workflow and code review
Cursor is built around reviewing changes as they land: Tab suggestions, chat/agent edits, and per-file diffs you accept or reject. Cloud agents (Premium and up) can run longer tasks in the background, then you review.
Claude Code asks permission before editing files or running commands by default. You can stay in approve-each-edit mode or allow broader auto-accept for a session. Diffs show up in the terminal and, with the IDE extension, as inline editor diffs. That review loop is the most-discussed pain point when people compare the two in 2026 Reddit threads: Cursor feels more visual; Claude Code feels more autonomous until you tighten permissions.
Pricing and limits, October 2026
Both vendors changed plans in 2026. Much of the coverage elsewhere still says "both are about $20". This is what the vendor pages showed on Oct 19, 2026. Key takeaway: using Claude models inside Cursor needs Premium ($30/mo) or above for new customers, billed at API list price from prepaid credit — Plus ($8) is Cursor/Grok models only.
| Plan | Claude Code path | Cursor (new customers) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Claude Free: chat only — Claude Code not included | $0: limited agent and chat requests |
| Entry | Pro $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually): Claude Code included, shared usage pool | Plus $8/mo: shared weekly usage pool, Grok models only |
| Mid | Max 5x $100/mo: 5× Pro per 5-hour session, higher output limits, monthly API credits (not usable in Claude Code) | Premium $30/mo: 4× Plus usage, cloud agents, Bugbot, third-party models at API list price |
| High | Max 20x $200/mo: 20× Pro per session | Super $100/mo (15× Plus) · Ultra $200/mo (50× Plus) |
| Team / Enterprise | Team and Enterprise include Claude Code (seat + usage pricing on vendor page) | Teams from $30/user/mo; Enterprise custom |

Usage limits: the fine print
Claude Code: included on Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. Limits reset on a rolling five-hour session window, and paid plans also have weekly caps. Claude chat and Claude Code share one pool. When you hit a limit on a paid plan you can wait, upgrade, or keep going on usage credits at standard API rates. Max's included monthly API credits cannot be spent in Claude Code or the Claude apps (Anthropic help centre, Oct 2026).
Cursor: every tier has an AI usage pool that refreshes weekly, shared across Cursor and Grok products on The X Subscription. Plus includes Grok models only. Premium and above unlock third-party models (including Claude) at API list price, billed separately. Subscriptions are sold through X Subscription Corp.
Models and context
Cursor offers its own Grok/Composer path plus third-party models on Premium and above. You pick a vendor per task.
Claude Code uses Anthropic models only (Opus, Sonnet, Haiku and related coding configs on the current Claude lineup). Context and model choice follow Anthropic's plan limits; we omit benchmark numbers here because we only publish scores with a named source and test setup.
Where it runs
Cursor is a desktop app. Cloud agents and Origin hosting appear on Premium and up.
Claude Code runs anywhere a terminal runs — local machines, SSH, CI — plus IDE extensions (including Cursor), Anthropic's desktop/web/mobile surfaces, GitHub Actions/GitLab CI patterns in the docs, and Slack. That is the clearest capability gap versus an IDE-only workflow.
Project rules and memory
- Claude Code: put a
CLAUDE.mdin the project root (coding standards, architecture, review checklists). It can also read an existingAGENTS.md. Skills package repeatable workflows; hooks run shell commands around edits. - Cursor: project rules under
.cursor/rulesand, where used,AGENTS.md-style agent instructions. - Migrating: copy the durable bits (stack, lint rules, "never do X") into both files if you use both tools; keep secrets out of either. Don't let both agents edit the same file at once.
Use both: a practical workflow
A pattern that shows up often: use Claude Code for the feature, refactor or multi-file fix; use Cursor for visual review, Tab polish and small edits; then send Claude Code back to run tests or open the PR. Install the Claude Code extension in Cursor, or keep Claude Code in the integrated terminal. Warn: two agents writing the same file concurrently creates merge pain — pick one writer at a time.
Who should pick which
- Production engineer who reviews every diff: Cursor first; add Claude Code for scoped terminal tasks.
- Delegator / solo builder: Claude Code (terminal or IDE extension) for multi-step work; Cursor optional for review.
- Non-technical founder describing outcomes: Claude Code's "hand it a task" posture often fits better than learning an AI IDE.
- Budget-capped student: Cursor Free or Plus ($8, Grok models only), or GitHub Copilot's free tier if you need an editor plugin without Claude. Claude Code needs at least Claude Pro.

How we compared
Scores come from the public ToolStandings formula (how we rank) and refresh automatically, so the numbers on this page always match the current tool pages. Momentum and Editor/community are still provisional for every tool. Vendor facts and prices were checked on the sources below on 2026-10-19.
